We have known for a long time that sitting is really bad for your spine. It is so bad that “sitting” occupations, like truck drivers, are the #1 occupation for spinal fusion surgery. What we don’t hear a lot about is the mounting evidence that sitting longer than 6 hours per day shortens our lives. A 2010 study showed that women who sat for 6 hours or more per day were 2.7 times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease (heart attack/stroke) than women who sat less than 3 hours per day!
Sitting also makes us fat. Yes, it has been shown that sitting significantly slows our metabolism. It does this by dramatically decreasing a substance called lipoprotein lipase, which packages fat in the blood and transports it to be used as energy. Without this mechanism in place, we deposit fat into fat cells and into our arteries.
The bottom line is that too much sitting can make us hurt, fat, and sick.
